Title: In Our Bedroom After The War
Rating: PG-13

For: icybright

Mai rolled over, opening her eyes though the room was too dark for her to see. She ran her hand over the wrinkled sheets and stretched her fingers to the far edge of the bed. No one lay beside her, and the indentation his body had left was cold. She felt herself frown, lips pursed and thin brows drawn together.

The ship that Azula had arranged to take them home was the most orderly ship that Zuko had ever sailed on in his life. Not one thing was out of order or messy. It lacked even the faint camaraderie and hominess of the ship that Zuko had sailed for 3 years during his banishment. It was formal, orderly, and rigid.

Note: Though it wasn't one of the themes, the challenge I took to heart with this story was to show love, without actually using the words "I love you". I really hope I pulled it off successfully, though it was the one thing that was driving me crazy while trying to write the story. :)

The problem wasn't that Zuko didn' t have what it took to pull the whole thing off, just that Fate had a funny way of working against him whenever he tried to set something into motion. Not the big things, no, because if he was anything it was capable in matters of the state and his position as Fire Lord. It was the little things, like expressing emotion, finding the right word at the right moment, and being romantic which all failed him completely. He would eventually learn that the only way he had a prayer of managing to successfully do anything of the sort was to do it without any excessive planning beyond… well, doing it; eventually, but not when he was faced with the impossibly daunting duty of formal courtship with the intent to marry. It sounded vaguely like a crime he was planning to commit, except criminals couldn't possibly feel the same sort of dread which hung heavily in the pit of Zuko's stomach, rolling and twisting at every thought which could possibly lead him to think about formally proposing to Mai.

Ember Island wasn't such a bad place once Mai got settled in. She could certainly do without the occasional guy making at pass at her, or a frequent girl drooling over Zuko, especially now that he was the Fire Lord. Apparently that meant he exuded "hot godliness," and yes someone totally went there less than fifteen feet away from her. It was all she could do not to flip out her knives and pin that annoying girl right to a tree from where she stood. She could do it quickly enough that no one would even see her move. Still, she couldn't be bothered to let a bunch of chumps get to her, so she resumed her reading under her umbrella while listening to the waves crash again the shore. It was a soothing sound that lulled her to sleep often, but given the high volume of peeping toms in the Fire Nation, she didn't dare fall asleep without Zuko by her side.

She stood there, staring out into the courtyard through the open window of her bedroom. It was spring, two years after the end of the war. Normalcy had taken a while to come into effect within the four nations, and it was finally washing over the Fire Nation after so long.

Title: Rest

Rest evaded Zuko. Staring at the canopy of the bed he shared with his wife of over four years, Zuko contemplated the recent days' events. Between Mai's strangely tired demeanor and Katara's secretive one, Zuko was at his wit's end. He would never understand women, he decided, staring enviously at a blissfully asleep Mai, but the knowledge didn't stop him from worrying. She was acting strangely, and he didn't know why. It confused and frustrated him. Sighing once more, Zuko rolled over. He watched Mai's slow breathing for a minute or two before snuggling himself closer to her warm body, his chest against her back and his arm around her waist. Eyes closed, he lay like that for several minutes trying to slow his breathing, clear his mind, and join her in slumber, but he just couldn't stop the worries racing through his brain.

"I'd die for you!" Mai cried, collapsing forward into Zuko's arms. The dim lighting of the prison cell and her long black bangs hid her expression, but her voice carried her emotions clearly into the air.

There were no clouds in the sky on the night of Zuko's 18th birthday, and Zuko could literally see the relief come over his council members when they realized that bad weather would not interrupt the day's festivities.
